Wantirna South Primary School - Art 2020

Wantirna South Primary School Year 5s have been busy working on our WaSPS: Our Journey video art project with artist Brett Ashby - celebrating the stories of our community over 80 years. Our Year 6’s have been creating works of art for display at graduation. We will leave them as a surprise for the big event but we are thrilled with student progress on this task so far.

The works included in the showcase are from Term 1 when we created very large art works using check pastel to make portraits inspired by Sandra Silberzweig, a Canadian artist whose brightly coloured and highly decorative works were a joy to explore.

Year 3 and 4 students are creating collages using strips of colour and painted paper that they draw detailed patterns on. Our work is inspired by our mentor artist Del Kathryn Barton. She is an Australian artist who has won an Archibald Prize for her exquisitely drawn and painted portraits. Our students completed workshops on drawing realistic eyes and used white paper to add emphasis to their figure against the colourful patterned backgrounds. Just like Barton does!

Our WaSPS Year 1 and 2 students have created incredible collages of native Australian birds using a templates made by our mentor artist, Pete Cromer. He is based in the Otway region of Victoria and used a technique of collaging paper shapes he paints with watercolour in layers. You may see his work on tea towels, drink bootlegs and sultana packets! Our students showed persistence working on this complex task that challenged their cutting, arranging and colouring skills.
