Media 2020

Like every subject, Media students have had to adapt to take on the challenges of 2020.

The greatest challenge for Media students working from home has been completing work without the benefit of the College's resources: in particular the DSLR cameras and industry standard editing software. This did not dampen creativity, instead it lit the fire of innovation and problem solving that will hopefully carry forward in the years to come.

Year 9 and 10 students have undertaken film, photography and design exercises using Adobe software, while Senior students are given creative freedom in individual and collaborative tasks in a range of media forms including: photography, film, print, web design, and hybridised media products.

Reflection

The following images are cast with my selected and interpreted take on the themes of Misery and Melancholy. I knew from the get go that this assignment would give me an opportunity to present my artistic outlook and creativity to this project as photography is a passion of mine outside of the classroom, despite being limited.

To further convey my themes, I chose to make my sequence entirely in black and white. Colourlessness in photography is often used to capture and represent darker themes, as well as being a bold stylistic choice. The technicalities of the shoots for each image were quite work intensive, but further proved to be worth it. With some help, I set up 1-2 lamps and lights to rid of unwanted shadows in the photographs, taking advantage of this to create a vignette or stage like effect in some.

Whilst each of my images show contrast and range to their direct theme, they are not all connected directly. I wanted to capture individual, metaphorical, symbolic and surreal elements to my theme in each image, thus letting the viewer conjure their own thoughts and feelings as to what the theme means in their minds alone.

Amber P - Adolescence representation

Reflection

My chosen theme was Adolescence and I chose to take photos that represented looking back at those times and the growth that a person can go through. I made the photos greyscale to further express the idea of looking back at the past and to show the light and dark that comes with growth. I used props to show the changing of time, this was made clear by the photos of my sister, and then me, where we wore the same jacket to indicate us being the same person at different points. I made sure some photos used negative space while others used positive, this was to show the contrast and change. Light was also used to make a similar effect. Altogether, the contrast, colour (or lack thereof) lighting, Mis en scène, and use of space painted a picture of adolescence and looking back at growth.
